Benefits and Issues: It is a right to arrange bedding according to the members of the household and the arrival of guests. Anything beyond this is extravagance, boastfulness, and mere adornment, which becomes a cause of burden.

´It was narrated from Jabir bin 'Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah said:` "A bed for a man, a bed for his wife, a third for his guest and the fourth is for the Shaitan."
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) The items given at the time of departure (rukhsati) should be appropriate, provided one has the means to give them. Extra items that will not even be used by them should not be given. Excessiveness (ghuluww) in anything is harmful. The prevalent custom of dowry (jahez) causes many social ills. A person becomes indebted, marriages do not take place, poor people become helpless, women grow old sitting at home, and later on, disputes and conflicts also arise.
(2) “For the devil” means that anything which is not used is unlawful (haram) to keep. It is a satanic act. If there are children or other individuals, then even if there are just beds for them, it is permissible, because those are used. “The fourth” refers to unnecessary items that are not used. And Allah knows best.
(3) It is possible that the purpose of this chapter is to show that more than one bed may be kept in the house, provided they are for the use of household members or guests; otherwise, it is impermissible.
