حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ قُسَيْطٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ ثَوْبَانَ ، عَنْ أُمِّهِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَ أَنْ يُسْتَمْتَعَ بِجُلُودِ الْمَيْتَةِ إِذَا دُبِغَتْ " .
Narrated Aishah, Ummul Muminin: The Prophet ﷺ ordered that the skins of the animals which had died a natural death should be used when they are tanned.

Nasai — Hadith 4249
´It was narrated that 'Aishah said:` "The Prophet was asked about the hides of dead animals." He said: "Tanning it purifies it."

Tanning can be done with anything that removes the moisture from the hide and eliminates the odor.

Nasai — Hadith 4257
´It was narrated from 'Aishah that:` the Messenger of Allah ordered that the hides of dead animals be made use of if they had been tanned. (Daif)

For details, see: (al-Mawsu‘ah al-Hadithiyyah, Musnad al-Imam Ahmad: 504/40 and Dhakheerat al-‘Uqba Sharh Sunan al-Nasa’i: 46, 34/33).

(2) “He commanded” means he granted permission and concession. It is possible that the command itself is intended, because permission to waste wealth is not given.
