Hadith 4094

حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ ، حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنٌ الْجُعْفِيُّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ أَبِي رَوَّادٍ ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " الْإِسْبَالُ فِي الْإِزَارِ ، وَالْقَمِيصِ ، وَالْعِمَامَةِ مَنْ جَرَّ مِنْهَا شَيْئًا خُيَلَاءَ لَمْ يَنْظُرِ اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ " .
Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: The Prophet ﷺ said: Hanging down is in lower garment, shirt and turban. If anyone trails any of them conceitedly, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.

Benefits and Issues:

The word "isbal" (letting the garment hang down) is generally used in the sense of letting the lower garment (such as the waist-wrapper or trousers) hang below the ankles.
However, it is not permissible to keep other garments longer than the permissible limit either.

Allamah Muhammad Fuad Abdul Baqi states that the scholars have defined the permissible length for the hanging part of the turban as up to the middle of the back.

The rarity of this hadith lies in the fact that the word "shay’an" (anything) in it is general, meaning isbal can occur with any garment when it exceeds the limit recognized among the noble people.
This point is not found in other hadiths that prohibit isbal.
