Narrated Ali ibn Shayban: We came upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Madina. He would postpone the afternoon prayer as long as the sun remained white and clear.

From authentic narrations, what is established is not delay, but rather performing (the prayer) at its earliest time.

‘Asr prayer should be performed at one shadow-length.

See Sunan al-Tirmidhi (vol. 1, pp. 38–39, hadith 149, and he said: “Hadith Hasan” and its chain is Hasan)

In one narration it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would delay the ‘Asr prayer until the sun remained white and clear. [

The chain of this narration is severely weak due to two unknown narrators:
Muhammad ibn Yazid al-Yamami and Yazid ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman. See: [هدية المسلمين ص25ح7]

If someone says that Imam Abu Dawud remained silent regarding this hadith, then the reply is that, according to the Deobandi scholars, the silence of Imam Abu Dawud over a hadith is not a proof. For example:

In one hadith it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) led the Fajr prayer, then he said to the noble Companions: “Do you recite (the Qur’an) behind the Imam?” The Companions replied: “Yes!” He said: “Do not do so, except for Surah al-Fatihah, for whoever does not recite it, his prayer is not valid.”

Imam Abu Dawud remained silent over this hadith, but Muhammad Sarfaraz Khan Safdar Deobandi has written regarding its narrator, Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Yasar, that he is a “liar and a deceiver.”

Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salamah (radi Allahu anha) said to some people: “The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would perform the Zuhr prayer earlier than you, while you perform the ‘Asr prayer earlier than him.”

To deduce from this hadith that the ‘Asr prayer should be delayed is invalid for two reasons:

First: There is no mention in it of delaying the ‘Asr prayer.

Second: There is no explicit statement anywhere regarding the exact times at which those people performed the Zuhr and ‘Asr prayers.

Those who abandon authentic and explicit ahadith and chase after ambiguous and unclear narrations are only those who are completely devoid of sound evidences.
