Hadith 4048

Narrated Imran ibn Husayn: The Prophet ﷺ said: I do not ride on purple, or wear a garment dyed with saffron, or wear shirt hemmed with silk. Pointing to the collar of his shirt al-Hasan (al-Basri) said: The perfume used by men should have an odour but no colour, and the perfume used by women should have a colour but no odour. Saeed said: I think he said: They interpreted his tradition about perfume used by women as applying when she comes out. But when she is with her husband, she may use any perfume she wishes.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ According to some researchers, this narration is authentic; moreover, the aforementioned issues are also established by other authentic narrations.

➋ The statement of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that “I do not do this” subtly prohibits the members of the Ummah from such acts. Undoubtedly, due to love for Allah and His Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), one cannot even think of opposing them.

➌ It is not permissible for men to use such powders and creams that enhance their complexion and appearance; this is permissible only for women.

➍ Fragrant perfumes and scents are for men, and a woman may use them inside the house to please her husband, but if she needs to go outside, she should thoroughly remove them.

➎ Islam does not permit any act in its society—even if it appears minor—that could gradually become the cause of a great tribulation. Especially, the corruption of chastity and modesty, and the spread of immorality in society, become a cause for being deprived of Allah’s mercy and incurring His severe punishment.
