Hadith 4039

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ بْنُ نَجْدَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَطِيَّةُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ غَنْمٍ الْأَشْعَرِيَّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَامِرٍ أَوْ أَبُو مَالِكٍ وَاللَّهِ يَمِينٌ أُخْرَى مَا كَذَّبَنِي أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : "لَيَكُونَنَّ مِنْ أُمَّتِي أَقْوَامٌ يَسْتَحِلُّونَ الْخَزَّ وَالْحَرِيرَ ، وَذَكَرَ كَلَامًا ، قَالَ : يُمْسَخُ مِنْهُمْ آخَرُونَ قِرَدَةً وَخَنَازِيرَ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ " ، قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد : وَعِشْرُونَ نَفْسًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَوْ أَكْثَرُ لَبِسُوا الْخَزَّ مِنْهُمْ أَنَسٌ ، وَالْبَرَاءُ بْنُ عَازِبٍ .
Narrated Abdur Rahman ibn Ghanam al-Ashari: Abu Amir or Abu Malik told me--I swear by Allah another oath that he did not believe me that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: There will be among my community people who will make lawful (the use of) khazz and silk. Some of them will be transformed into apes and swine. Abu Dawud said: Twenty Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or more put on khazz. Anas and al-Bara bin Azib were among them.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ In this hadith, the word "al-khazz" (with both kha and za dotted) has three meanings which have been mentioned above. Pure silk is unanimously haram (forbidden) for men. The conjunction between "al-khazz" and "al-hareer" (silk) is either for explanation or for indicating a type. If it is mixed or of another type, then it is better to avoid it, so that there is no resemblance to non-Muslims and affluent people.

➋ There is another narration of this word "al-khazz" as "al-hurr" (with ha having a kasrah and ra undotted). Its meaning is: "farj," that is, the private part for a woman. The implication is that those people will consider adultery and wearing silk garments to be lawful.

➌ The transformation of such people, meaning the changing of their forms, if it happens in reality, then it is not difficult for Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. And if what is meant is metaphorical, then in the present circumstances, among the permissive people, the characteristics of monkeys and pigs can be observed, as people, in imitation of non-Muslims, do not feel any shame in boldness, dishonor, and cuckoldry.

Takhrij:
«أخرجه أبوداود، اللباس، باب ما جاء في الخز، حديث:4039، وأصله في البخاري، الأشربة، باب ما جاء فيمن يسحل الخمر ويسميه بغير اسمه، حديث:5590.»
Explanation:
In this hadith, two things have been declared forbidden: one is wearing silk, and the other is fornication and adultery.
Wearing silk garments breeds arrogance and pride within a person.
And this is the attire of the arrogant; for this reason, it has been declared forbidden for the men of the ummah. Furthermore, it is an adornment and a delicate garment, which, contrary to men, is considered the attire of women, and it is forbidden for men to imitate women.

Narrator of the Hadith:
«حضرت ابوعامر اشعری رضی اللہ عنہ » His name is Abdullah bin Hani or Ubaid bin Wahb radi Allahu anhu.
He was honored with the companionship of the Prophet (sharaf al-sahabah).
He settled in Syria (al-Sham).
He passed away during the caliphate of the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik bin Marwan.
