Hadith 3974

Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Muslims met a man with some sheep of his. He said: Peace be upon you. But they killed him and took those few sheep. Thereupon the following Quranic verse was revealed: ". . . And say to anyone who offers you a salutation: Thou art none of believer, coveting the perishable good of this life. " meaning these few sheep.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ In this noble verse, the word (as-salaam) appears with an alif, and in another recitation, it appears without the alif. The meaning of (salam) will be that when a person expresses obedience to you, do not say about him that he is not a believer.

➋ The phrase "as-salaamu alaykum" is an Islamic symbol. Upon hearing it, it is not permissible to kill the person considering him a liar, nor to regard him as a disbeliever, except if there is a clear proof for such an assumption.
