A similar tradition has also been narrated by Anas from the Prophet ﷺ through a different chain of narrators.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
390. Commentary:
➊ Human saliva is pure, and similarly, the phlegmatic substance and nasal discharge are also pure. However, if they become visibly apparent on clothing, they appear unpleasant. Therefore, for the sake of cleanliness, they should be cleaned. If, during prayer, one feels the need to spit or to clean the nose, the Sunnah method is that a person should spit into his garment (such as a handkerchief, etc.) and then rub that garment together. One should not keep the saliva or phlegm, etc., inside the mouth waiting for the prayer to end, as this causes disturbance to the humility and concentration (khushu‘ and khudu‘) of the prayer.
