Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sued to teach them the following words in the case of alarm: I seek refuge in Allah's perfect words from His anger, the evil of His servants, the evil suggestions of the devils and their presence. Abdullah ibn Amr used to teach them to those of his children who had reached puberty, and he wrote them down (on some material) and hung on the child who had not reached puberty.

Benefits and Issues: Our esteemed researcher has declared this narration weak in terms of its chain of transmission. However, Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah writes regarding this that the supplication (du'a) phrases in this narration are of the level of hasan (good), but the practice of Abdullah radi Allahu anhu—that he used to write it and hang it around the necks of children—is weak. See (Sunan Abi Dawud). Therefore, it cannot be used as evidence for the permissibility of hanging amulets (ta'widh) around the neck or elsewhere.

´`Amr bin Shu`aib narrated from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:` “When one of you becomes frightened during sleep, then let him say: ‘I seek refuge in Allah’s Perfect Words from His anger, His punishment, and the evil of His creatures, from the whisperings of the Shayatin, and that they should come (A`ūdhu bikalimātillāhit-tāmmati min ghaḍabihī wa `iqābihī wa sharri `ibādih, wa min hamazātish-shayāṭīni wa an yaḥḍurūn).’ For verily, they shall not harm him.” He said: “So `Abdullah bin `Amr used to teach it to those of his children who attained maturity, and those of them who did not, he would write it on a sheet and then hang it around his neck.”
