Hadith 3863

حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " احْتَجَمَ عَلَى وِرْكِهِ مِنْ وَثْءٍ كَانَ بِهِ " .
Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had himself cupped above the thigh for a contusion from which he suffered.

➊ It is permissible to undergo cupping (hijama) while in the state of ihram.

➋ If hair must be removed in the process of cupping, then compensation (fidyah) should be given.

(1) The aforementioned narration has been declared weak in its chain of transmission by the researcher of the book, whereas other scholars have considered it to be sahih li ghayrihi (authentic due to supporting narrations), and the preferred opinion is theirs. See: (al-Mawsu‘ah al-Hadithiyyah, Musnad al-Imam Ahmad: 23/182). Therefore, in case of necessity, cupping (hijamah) may be performed. This is also established by other authentic narrations.

(2) “Moch” refers to a situation where the bone is not harmed, but there is pain in the flesh and muscles, or the bone is struck but is spared from breaking. The discussion regarding the permissibility of cupping and related matters has already passed above under Hadith: 2848.
