Hadith 3740

Jabir reported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as sayings: when one of you is invited to a meal, he must accept. If he wishes he may eat, but if he wishes (to leave), he may leave.

Benefits and Issues:

A fasting person can participate in an invitation while maintaining his fast; his mere presence will bring joy to the host and will express that his participation in the gathering is not due to any displeasure.

If the fasting person does not partake in the meal, he should supplicate for the host. The Prophetic instruction (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is:
(Sahih Muslim, The Book of Marriage, Chapter: The Command to Respond to an Invitation, Hadith: 1431)
“When any of you is invited, he should accept; then if he is fasting, he should supplicate (make du‘a) or pray, and if he is not fasting, he should eat.”

The meaning of “فَلْيُصَلِّ” (then let him pray) has also been interpreted as performing prayer, so in this way, the fasting person will receive the reward of prayer, and the attendees will attain the blessing of the prayer.
