Hadith 3693

Abu Hurairah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to the deputation of Abd al-Qais: I forbid you the use of hollow stumps, vessels smeared with pitch, green harrs, pumpkins, and a skin cut off at the top, but drink from your skin and tie it with string.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefit:
Initially, the ruling was that nabidh should not be prepared in these vessels, because nabidh in these vessels would quickly take on the form of wine. However, later the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam permitted the preparation of nabidh in these vessels. The details of this are found in Sahih Muslim (977). Also, in Sahih Muslim (17), four types of vessels are mentioned, of which two vessels were mentioned separately by Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu on his own accord, and their mention is also found in the marfu‘ hadith.
