Hadith 3453

حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : كَانَ سُفْيَانُ يَكْرَهُ هَذَا التَّفْسِيرَ لَيْسَ مِنَّا ، لَيْسَ مِثْلَنَا .
Yahya said: Sufyan disapproved of the interpretation of the phrase "has nothing to do with us" as "not like us".

Benefits and Issues:
The meaning of [لیس منا] is "not from among us."
And the meaning of [لیس مثلنا] is "not like us and not similar to us."
And the purport of the statement of Imam Sufyan rahimahullah is that severity and strictness are beneficial for warning against and preventing wrongful actions; therefore, one should never render the words of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in a soft or gentle manner.
These words should be conveyed exactly as they were spoken.
