Brief Explanation
1؎: Until it is known from where the slave-girl has earned, whether by lawful means or unlawful, it is not correct to take her earnings. The scholars say that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade taking the earnings of slave-girls because people used to impose a tax upon them, and whatever they earned from wherever, they would bring it and give it to their master. If they could not find work, they would bring earnings from fornication (zina) and give it. Therefore, he forbade taking their earnings until it is ascertained that her earnings are from lawful means. According to some people, what is meant by "earnings" here is the earnings from fornication (zina).
