Narrated Ubaydah ibn as-Samit: I taught some persons of the people of Suffah writing and the Quran. A man of them presented to me a bow. I said: It cannot be reckoned property; may I shoot with it in Allah's path? I must come to the Messenger of of Allah ﷺ and ask him (about it). So I came to him and said: Messenger of Allah ﷺ, one of those whom I have been teaching writing and the Quran has presented me a bow, and as it cannot be reckoned property, may I shoot with it in Allah's path? He said: If you want to have a necklace of fire on you, accept it.

1؎: In Sahih Bukhari, there is the narration of Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma regarding taking a wage for the Book of Allah, and the narration of Abu Sa'id Khudri radi Allahu anhu regarding reciting Surah Al-Fatihah as ruqyah (incantation) and taking a wage for it. Similarly, in both Sahihs, there is the hadith of Sahl bin Sa'd radi Allahu anhu in which it is mentioned that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed the marriage of a man and set some verses of the Qur'an as his dowry. In light of these narrations, the majority of scholars say that it is permissible to take a wage for teaching the Qur'an, leading the prayer (imamat), judging (qada), and giving the call to prayer (adhan), etc., because none of these three narrations are countered by the narration of Ubadah bin Samit radi Allahu anhu (since in both of its chains there are narrators who have been criticized).
