Narrated Saad ibn Abi Waqqas: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade to sell fresh dates for dry dates when payment is made at a later date. Abu Dawud said: The tradition mentioned above has also been transmitted by Saad (b. Abi Waqqas) from the Prophet ﷺ through a different chain of narrators in a similar way.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues:
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) permitted selling dates (tamr: dried dates) in exchange for dates,
but only if it is equal for equal and on the spot (hand to hand).
In this hadith, the question was asked to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)
whether it is permissible to sell fresh dates (rutab) in exchange for dried dates (tamr).
So he explained that after drying, the weight and quantity of dates decrease.
Therefore, he completely prohibited this transaction.
According to this hadith, selling fresh dates in exchange for dried dates is not permissible,
even if it is equal for equal and on the spot (hand to hand).
