Narrated Samurah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us and said: Is here any one of such and such tribe present? But no one replied. He again asked: Is here any one of such and such tribe present? But no one replied. He again asked: Is here any one of such and such tribe? Then a man stood and said: I am (here), Messenger of Allah. He said: What prevented you from replying the first two times? I wish to tell you something good. Your companion has been detained (from entering Paradise) on account of his debt. Then I saw him that he paid off all his debt on his behalf and there remained no one to demand from him anything. Abu Dawud said: The name of the narrator Sam'an is Sam'an bin Mushannaj.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues:
Alongside the rights of Allah, it will be very difficult to attain deliverance without fulfilling the rights of the servants, especially the repayment of debts and the like.
And it is the right of the heirs
that they should pay off the debt of their deceased.
The purpose behind the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) abstention from participating in the funeral prayer of a debtor was also this:
that the deceased’s debt be paid off immediately.

Urdu marginal note:
“He is detained” or prevented from entering Paradise. Your intention was that his debt should be paid off quickly on his behalf so that he may be released or may enter Paradise.
