The tradition mentioned above has also been narrated by Jabir through a different chain of transmitters. Abu Dawud said: Uthman said: "or anything added to it. " Sulaiman bin Musa said: "or anything written on it. " Musaddad did not mention in his version the words "or anything added to it. " Abu Dawud said: The word "and that" (wa an) remained hidden to me.

Brief Explanation
1؎: By writing on the grave is meant the inscription (katba) that some people place on the grave, in which the qualities of the deceased and the date of death are recorded. Some people have said that what is meant is writing the name of Allah or the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), or writing verses of the Qur'an, etc., because at times an animal may defecate or urinate on it, which results in disrespect to these things.

Benefits and Issues: To place a plaque on the grave with the name and lineage of the deceased, or to inscribe his praise and commendation, or to write the name of Allah, His Messenger, or the Qur’an, all of these are impermissible. However, it is permissible to place an appropriate marker for identification. Just as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) placed a stone on the grave of Hazrat Uthman ibn Maz’oon (radi Allahu anhu).
