Narrated Ubadah ibn as-Samit: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to stand up for a funeral until the corpse was placed in the grave. A learned Jew (once) passed him and said: This is how we do. The Prophet ﷺ sat down and said: Sit down and act differently from them.

Benefits and Issues:
➊
This makes it clear that standing until the burial of the deceased has been abrogated.
Rather, when the bier (charpoy) of the deceased is placed on the ground,
those who have accompanied it may sit down.
➋
Maintaining distinction from non-Muslims is an important principle of Islam.
This principle is observed in the Shariah both in acts of worship
and in other daily matters. Therefore, the major day of Christians, the New Year (celebrating on January 1st),
and the Hindu festivals of Basant, Holi, and Diwali, as well as customs related to marriage and mourning—such as wearing black clothes on occasions of grief, considering the remarriage of a widow as objectionable, or the groom freely mingling and joking with the bride’s female relatives at the time of marriage—
and other such practices are prohibited due to being contrary to the teachings of Islam and because they are customs of non-Muslims. It is extremely necessary to avoid them.

Our esteemed researcher has declared the aforementioned narration weak in its chain of transmission. However, this same narration is also reported in Sunan Abi Dawud (Hadith: 3176).
There too, our Shaykh has declared it weak in its chain.
But he has further written that the narration of Sahih Muslim (962)
is sufficient in this regard.
Therefore, the issue remains as follows: according to some researchers, standing upon seeing the deceased has been abrogated,
and according to others, standing is recommended (mustahabb);
only its obligation has been abrogated. And Allah knows best.
