Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
This narration is weak in its chain of transmission.
However, the ruling remains that there should not be any wailing (niyahah) with the deceased.
Wailing (niyahah) is prohibited everywhere.
And nowadays, the innovation (bid‘ah) that has become common,
that while carrying the deceased, people call out the testimony of faith (kalimah shahadah),
this is included among the prohibited voices mentioned in the hadith.
It is narrated with an authentic chain in Sunan al-Kubra by al-Bayhaqi and in Kitab al-Zuhd,
that the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in), while carrying the deceased,
considered raising the voice to be disliked (makruh).
(Sunan al-Kubra lil-Bayhaqi: 4/74,
and Kitab al-Zuhd by Ibn al-Mubarak, p. 83) And it is also not permissible to carry fire,
as is done among Christians and others who carry torches,
or as people among us place lamps on graves.
However, arranging for light at night for the purpose of burial is permissible due to a legitimate Shar‘i need.
