Narrated Layla daughter of Qa'if ath-Thaqafiyyah: I was one of those who washed Umm Kulthum, daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, when she died. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ first gave us lower garment, then shirt, then head-wear, then cloak (which covers the whole body), and then she was shrouded in another garment. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting at the door, and he had shroud with him. He gave us the garments one by one.
Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
This narration is weak.
The permissibility of using more cloth in the shroud (kafan) for a woman than for a man is not established by any authentic hadith.
Therefore, men and women are equal regarding the number of shroud (kafan) cloths.
And Allah knows best.

How many garments should be in a woman's shroud?
Question: How many garments should be in a woman's shroud (kafan)? Is it permissible for a woman to have pajama (trousers) in her shroud?
Answer: The general opinion of the jurists (fuqaha) and hadith scholars (muhaddithin) is that a woman should be shrouded in five garments:
➊ Izar (lower wrap)
➋ Qamees (shirt)
➌ Khimar, i.e., head covering (which is also called damani or sarband)
➍ Two lifafahs, i.e., two large sheets in which she is wrapped
The evidence for this is stated as follows: Layla bint Qaif Thaqafiyyah radi Allahu anha narrates:
“I was among those women who gave ritual bath (ghusl) to the daughter of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Umm Kulthum radi Allahu anha. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam first gave us the lower wrap, then the shirt, then the khimar (head covering), then a sheet, and after that she was wrapped in another garment. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was sitting by the door, and he had the shroud of Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (radi Allahu anha) with him, and he would hand us each garment one by one.” [أبوداؤد، كتاب الجنائز: باب فى كفن المرأة 3157، مسند أحمد 380/6]
However, this narration is not authentic. In its chain of transmission is Nuh ibn Hakim, who is an unknown person; his reliability is not established. Similarly, there is also a person named Dawud in it, about whom nothing is known as to who he is. And it should also be remembered that when Umm Kulthum radi Allahu anha passed away, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was in the field of Badr and was not present with her. See: [نصب الراية 258/2]
For this reason, Allamah al-Albani rahimahullah says:
«والمرأة فى ذٰلك كالرجل اذ لا دليل على التفريق» [أحكام الجنائز ص/85]
“In this matter, a woman is like a man; there is no evidence for any difference between the shroud of a man and that of a woman.”
The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was shrouded in three white cotton Sahuli sheets; there was neither a shirt nor a turban in it. [مسنداحمد 40/6، 118]
Therefore, the Sunnah is that whether the deceased is a man or a woman, he or she should be buried in three garments. «والله اعلم!»
