Hadith 3109

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ،حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ : أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لَا يَتَمَنَّيَنَّ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَوْتَ " ، فَذَكَرَ مِثْلَهُ .
Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet ﷺ as saying: No one of you should wish for death. He then mentioned the rest of the tradition in a similar manner.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues:
➊ In general circumstances, it is not permissible to supplicate for death.
➋ However, when a person becomes helpless,
➌ is unable to fulfill obligatory duties,
➍ and there is a fear that some religious tribulation may befall,
➎ then it is permissible to supplicate for death.
➏ As is reported regarding Umar ibn al-Khattab radi Allahu anhu, Ali radi Allahu anhu, and Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz rahimahullah, among others.
