Hadith 3025

Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah: Wahb said: I asked Jabir about the condition of Thaqif when they took the oath of allegiance. He said: They stipulated to the Prophet ﷺ that there would be no sadaqah (i. e. zakat) on them nor Jihad (striving in the way of Allah). He then heard the Prophet ﷺ say: Later on they will give sadaqah (zakat) and will strive in the way of Allah when they embrace Islam.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
After completing the Battle of Hunayn, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) set out towards Ta’if in Shawwal of the 8th year of Hijrah.
Those people fortified themselves in their fortress.
So, they were besieged.
This siege lasted for eighteen to twenty days, or according to some narrations, up to forty days.
Even before the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) reached Madinah, their chief, ‘Urwah ibn Mas‘ud al-Thaqafi, came to the service of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and accepted Islam.
However, his people sent an official delegation in Ramadan of the 9th year of Hijrah and accepted Islam.

2.
This tribe too was not subdued through warfare.
Rather, they accepted Islam by sending a delegation.

3.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was, in any case, the Messenger of Allah.
His decisions were based on revelation and inspiration.
However, this decision of the caller to Islam (da‘i) was based on wisdom and prudence.

4.
There is no harm in granting some appropriate concession to beginners for the sake of winning hearts (ta’lif al-qulub), but there should also be no negligence in clarifying the reality of the religion.
