Hadith 2823

Narrated Ata ibn Yasar: A man of Banu Harith was pasturing a pregnant she-camel in one of the ravines of Uhud, (he saw that) it was about to die; he could find nothing to slaughter it; he took a stake and stabbed it in the upper part of its breast until he made its blood flow. He then came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him about that, and he ordered him to eat it.

Hadith Commentary:
For slaughtering an animal, a sharp knife should be used, as it is narrated that Adi bin Hatim radi Allahu anhu asked the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that sometimes one of us goes hunting and does not have a knife for slaughtering—can he slaughter with a sharp stone or a sharp piece of wood? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied:
“Spill the blood with whatever you wish and mention the name of Allah.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Al-Dahaya, Hadith: 2824)
In case of necessity, if a knife is not available, it is permissible to slaughter with a sharp-edged stone or a sharp piece of wood, but it is not permissible to slaughter with a tooth, bone, or nail, because this resembles the practices of the disbelievers.
In another hadith, it is mentioned that a person slaughtered a rabbit with a sharp stone and asked the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam about it, and he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam permitted him to eat it.
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Al-Dahaya, Hadith: 2822)
