Hadith 2820

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade to eat (the meat of animals) slaughtered by the bedouins for vainglory and pride. Abu Dawud said: The narrator Ghundar narrated this tradition as a saying of Ibn Abbas (and not of the Prophet).

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues:
Among some Arabs, there was a custom in which they would begin slaughtering camels in competition with one another.
And this contest would continue until finally one would become unable to continue, and in this way, they would express their own superiority, wealth, and magnanimity over others.
Whereas in reality, there was no actual need to slaughter the animals.
Thus, the consumption of the meat of such animals has been prohibited.
Even if they were slaughtered with the recitation of the takbir.
Because this involves extravagance, wastefulness, and the pointless squandering of wealth.
Some scholars have also interpreted this situation as being akin to slaughtering in the name of other than Allah.
Because these animals were slaughtered due to following desires (hawa an-nafs),
not for Allah, nor for the legislated purposes prescribed by Him.
The authenticity of this narration is disputed.
However, that which has been prohibited in it is, in light of other evidences, indeed prohibited.
