Hadith 2789

حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ ، حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَيَّاشُ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ الْقِتْبَانِيُّ ، عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ هِلَالٍ الصَّدَفِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " أُمِرْتُ بِيَوْمِ الْأَضْحَى عِيدًا جَعَلَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لِهَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ ، قَالَ الرَّجُلُ : أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ أَجِدْ إِلَّا أُضْحِيَّةً أُنْثَى ، أَفَأُضَحِّي بِهَا قَالَ : لَا ، وَلَكِنْ تَأْخُذُ مِنْ شَعْرِكَ وَأَظْفَارِكَ وَتَقُصُّ شَارِبَكَ ، وَتَحْلِقُ عَانَتَكَ ، فَتِلْكَ تَمَامُ أُضْحِيَّتِكَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ " .
Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As: The Prophet ﷺ said: I have been commanded to celebrate festival ('Id) on the day of sacrifice, which Allah, Most High, has appointed for this community. A man said: If I do not find except a she-goat or a she-camel borrowed for milk or other benefits, should I sacrifice it? He said: No, but you should clip your hair, and nails, trim your moustaches, and shave your pubes. This is all your sacrifice in the eyes of Allah, Most High.

Benefits and Issues:
In reality, whoever does not have the means to offer a sacrifice (qurbani),
then not only is the sacrifice excused for him,
but if he performs the aforementioned act after the Eid prayer on the day of Eid al-Adha, Allah Ta’ala will grant him the reward of sacrifice for that alone.

Milking Animal? ………

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As radi Allahu anhu that a man said to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: What is your opinion, if I only find a female sacrificial animal (a milking animal), should I offer it as sacrifice?

The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: No, but you should cut your nails and hair, trim your mustache, and shave the pubic hair, then with Allah this will be your complete sacrifice.

(Sunan Abi Dawud: 2789, its chain is Hasan, and it was authenticated by Ibn Hibban, al-Mawarid: 1043, and al-Hakim 4/223 and al-Dhahabi)

The narrator of this hadith, Isa bin Hilal al-Sudafi, is trustworthy (saduq). See Taqrib al-Tahdhib (5337).

He was declared trustworthy (thiqah) by Yaqub bin Sufyan al-Farisi (al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh 2/515, 487) and Ibn Hibban and others.

The narration of such a narrator never falls below the level of Hasan.

Ayyash bin Abbas al-Qutbani was trustworthy (thiqah). See al-Taqrib (5269). The rest of the chain is authentic.

From this hadith, it is understood that a person who does not have the ability to offer a sacrifice, if he refrains from cutting his hair and trimming his nails from the sighting of the crescent of Dhu al-Hijjah until after the Eid prayer, he will receive the reward of sacrifice.

(1) The relevance of the hadith to the chapter is clear: for the person who does not have the ability to offer a sacrifice (qurbani), the ruling of the Shariah is that he should pay special attention to his personal cleanliness and hygiene. On the day of Eid, he should trim his hair and nails, cut his moustache, and clean the hair below the navel. This attention to cleanliness will serve as a substitute for offering the sacrifice for him, insha Allah.

(2) Beautifying oneself and taking care of cleanliness on the day of Eid is recommended (mustahabb), since it is a day of gathering for the people. Therefore, for the sake of this day, bathing, wearing good clothes, applying perfume, and fulfilling other matters prescribed by the Shariah are desirable and favored acts in the sight of the pure Shariah. This is why, even if one is unable to offer the sacrifice, fulfilling these mentioned acts properly has been declared equivalent in reward and merit to performing the complete sacrifice.

(3) This blessed hadith also highlights the special importance of offering the sacrifice, because such beautification has been declared recommended (mustahabb) for the one performing the sacrifice, so that there is bodily resemblance with those who are offering the sacrifice.

(4) It is understood that the person who does not have the ability to offer the sacrifice is exempt from it. “Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.” []
