Narrated Dhul-Jawshan: A man of ad-Dabab, said: When the Prophet ﷺ became free from the people of Badr I brought to him a colt of my mare called al-Qarha' I said: Muhammad, I have brought a colt of a al-Qarha', so that you may take it. He said: I have no need of it. If you wish that I give you a select coat of mail from (the spoils of) Badr, I shall do it. I said: I cannot give you today a colt in exchange. He said: Then I have no need of it.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues:
The purpose of the Imam bringing this narration under this chapter is to establish the ruling on this issue:
That it is permissible to give a weapon to a disbeliever or the like,
which he may take to the land of war (dar al-harb).
The reason for this inference is that Dhi’l-Jawshan was a disbeliever at that time.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) offered him coats of mail (armor),
which he did not accept.
A coat of mail is also a weapon of war,
and he would have taken it to the land of war.
However, this narration itself is weak.
The second issue mentioned in this is that whenever someone gave a gift to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he would certainly give a gift in return.
As is in this narration, when he did not wish to accept a gift in exchange for his own,
the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) also declined his gift.
This practice of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is established from authentic ahadith.
