Hadith 2723

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيل بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ الزُّبَيْدِيِّ ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، أَنَّ عَنْبَسَةَ بْنَ سَعِيدٍ ، أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ، يُحَدِّثُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ الْعَاصِ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، بَعَثَ أَبَانَ بْنَ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْعَاصِ عَلَى سَرِيَّةٍ مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ قِبَلَ نَجْدٍ فَقَدِمَ أَبَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ وَأَصْحَابُهُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِخَيْبَرَ بَعْدَ أَنْ فَتَحَهَا وَإِنَّ حُزُمَ خَيْلِهِمْ لِيفٌ فَقَالَ أَبَانُ : اقْسِمْ لَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ : فَقُلْتُ : لَا تَقْسِمْ لَهُمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ أَبَانُ : أَنْتَ بِهَا يَا وَبْرُ تَحَدَّرُ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ رَأْسِ ضَالٍ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : اجْلِسْ يَا أَبَانُ وَلَمْ يَقْسِمْ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Narrated Saeed ibn al-As: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu Saeed ibn al-As with an expedition from Madina towards Najd. Aban ibn Saeed and his companions came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Khaybar after it had been captured. The girths of their horses were made of palm fibres. Aban said: Give us a share (from the booty), Messenger of Allah. Abu Hurairah said: I said: Do not give them a share, Messenger of Allah. Aban said: Why are you talking so, Wabr. You have come to us from the peak of Dal. The Prophet ﷺ said: Sit down, Aban. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not give any share to them (from the booty).

Hadith Commentary:
Ibn Qawqal (radi Allahu anhu) was a Companion. Aban bin Sa'id (radi Allahu anhu) had not yet embraced Islam, and it was in this state that he killed Ibn Qawqal (radi Allahu anhu) as a martyr.
The reference of Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) was towards this incident, but Aban bin Sa'id (radi Allahu anhu) did not like this remark and criticized him personally for it.

"Warb" is an animal equal in size to a cat.
"Dan" is the name of the mountain which was in the land of Daws, the homeland of Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu). In some manuscripts, after the words "falam yuqsim lahum," there are additional words: "qala Abu Abdillah al-dhal al-sidr," meaning Imam Bukhari said "dhal" refers to the wild lote tree (sidr).
This explanation is based on those manuscripts in which, instead of "Ra's Dan," it is written "Ra's Dhal."

Hadith Commentary:

Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) came to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) after the conquest of Khaybar and requested something from the spoils of war. Upon this, Aban (radi Allahu anhu), the son of Sa'id ibn al-As (radi Allahu anhu), said:
"Do not give him anything from the spoils of war because he did not participate in the battle of Khaybar."
Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) submitted:
"O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)! He is the killer of Ibn Qawqal, and he is not worthy that his statement be listened to attentively or acted upon."


Since Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) was of short stature, he (Aban radi Allahu anhu) likened Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) to the back (dubr) as a form of disparagement and mocked him.


It should be noted that Ibn Qawqal (radi Allahu anhu) was martyred by Aban (radi Allahu anhu) in the Battle of Uhud, while he (Aban) had not yet embraced Islam.
He accepted Islam before the Battle of Khaybar, and the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had sent him on a mission.
The intent of Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) was that such a killer should not be given a share from the spoils of war.
