Narrated Abdur Rahman ibn Samurah ibn Kabul: AbuLabid said: We were with Abdur Rahman ibn Samurah ibn Kabul. The people got booty and plundered it. He stood and addressed (the people): I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibiting getting property from the booty before its distribution. Therefore, they returned what they had taken, He then distributed it among them.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues: ➊ Just as the flesh of a dead animal (carrion) is not lawful and permissible, the same ruling applies to that wealth which is taken without due right.
➋ The Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not permit consuming the rights of others even in conditions of extreme hardship and need.
➌ Imposing a financial penalty (ta'zir bil-mal) is permissible.
➍ It is obligatory upon the Imam (leader) to ensure justice and fairness among his subjects in all circumstances. Through this, Allah’s mercy descends and dominance over the enemy is attained.
