Hadith 2609

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ بَحْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَاتِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيل ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَجْلَانَ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " إِذَا كَانَ ثَلَاثَةٌ فِي سَفَرٍ فَلْيُؤَمِّرُوا أَحَدَهُمْ " ، قَالَ نَافِعٌ : فَقُلْنَا لِأَبِي سَلَمَةَ : فَأَنْتَ أَمِيرُنَا .
Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet ﷺ said: When three are on a journey, they should appoint one of them as their commander. Nafi said: We said to Abu Salamah: You are our commander.
Brief Explanation
1؎: The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gave this command so that unity may be maintained among them and discord may not arise, and this is only possible when they are under the authority of an amir (leader).

Benefits and Issues:

Through this system, the affairs of travel become organized and easy.
And everyone experiences convenience.
There is no state of every person being concerned only for himself.
Furthermore, when appointing a leader (amir) is emphasized even in such a minor gathering,
then the importance of the greater leadership (amirat uzma) becomes even more evident.

A community should never be without a leader (amir) and leadership (amirat) at any time.
