Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat on his camel to go out on a journey, he said: "Allah is Most Great" three times. Then he said: "Glory be to Him Who has made subservient to us, for we had not the strength for it, and to our Lord do we return. O Allah, we ask Thee in this journey of ours, uprightness, piety and such deeds as are pleasing to Thee. O Allah, make easy for us this journey of ours and make its length short for us. O Allah, Thou art the Companion in the journey, and the One Who looks after the family and property in our absence. " When he returned, he said these words adding: "Returning, repentant, serving and praising our Lord. " The Prophet ﷺ and his armies said: "Allah is Most Great" when they went up to high ground; and when armies said: "Allah is most Great" when they went up to high ground; and when they descended, they said: "Glory be to Allah. " So the prayer was patterned on that.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues: ➊ Tawhid is precisely that a person should not forget his Lord, the Exalted, at any moment. The love of Allah and His Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) lies in this: that in every single action, one should follow the example of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
➋ The phrase of the hadith (fa wudi‘at as-salatu ‘ala dhalik) — “and the prayer was also established upon this principle” — is weak. (Shaykh al-Albani)

´Ibn `Umar narrated that:` When the Prophet (ﷺ) wanted to travel, when he mounted his riding camel, he would say the Takbir three times and say: Glory is to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we were not able to do it. And, surely, to our Lord are we returning (Subḥān alladhī sakh-khara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahū muqrinīn. Wa innā ilā rabbinā lamunqalibūn). Then he would say: “O Allah, I ask You in this journey of mine from the righteousness and piety and actions that which you are pleased with. O Allah, ease for us the path, and make near for us the distance of the land. O Allah, You are the companion in the journey, and the caretaker for the family. O Allah, accompany us in our journey, and take care of our families (Allāhumma innī as’aluka fī safarī hādhā minal-birri wat-taqwā, wa minal-`amali mā tarḍā. Allāhumma hawwin `alainal-masīra, waṭwi `annā bu`dal-arḍ. Allāhumma antaṣ-ṣāḥibu fis safari wal-khalīfatu fil-ahli. Allāhumma aṣḥabnā fī safarinā wakhlufnā fī ahlinā).” And when he would return to his family, he would say: “(We are) Returning, if Allah wills, repenting, worshipping, and to our Lord directing the praise (Ā’ibūna in shā’ Allāh, tā’ibūna `ābidūna lirabbinā hāmidūn).”

Explanation: 1: O Allah! In this journey, I seek from You goodness and piety (taqwa), and I ask You for the ability to perform deeds by which You are pleased. O Allah, make this journey easy for us, Shorten for us the distance of the earth (make the journey seem shorter and easier), O Allah, You are the companion in the journey, And You are my deputy and caretaker over my family at home, O Allah! Remain with us in our journey, And take care of our families in our absence.
2: We are returning to our families, insha Allah, Repentant, Worshipping our Lord, And praising (Him).
