Hadith 2599

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat on his camel to go out on a journey, he said: "Allah is Most Great" three times. Then he said: "Glory be to Him Who has made subservient to us, for we had not the strength for it, and to our Lord do we return. O Allah, we ask Thee in this journey of ours, uprightness, piety and such deeds as are pleasing to Thee. O Allah, make easy for us this journey of ours and make its length short for us. O Allah, Thou art the Companion in the journey, and the One Who looks after the family and property in our absence. " When he returned, he said these words adding: "Returning, repentant, serving and praising our Lord. " The Prophet ﷺ and his armies said: "Allah is Most Great" when they went up to high ground; and when armies said: "Allah is most Great" when they went up to high ground; and when they descended, they said: "Glory be to Allah. " So the prayer was patterned on that.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:

Tawhid is precisely that a person should not forget his Lord, the Exalted, at any moment.
The love of Allah and His Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) lies in this:
that in every single action, one should follow the example of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

The phrase of the hadith (fa wudi‘at as-salatu ‘ala dhalik) — “and the prayer was also established upon this principle” —
is weak.

Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
Wa‘tha:
Hardship and severity.
Ka’abatun:
A matter that causes distress and worry.
(2)
Al-munqalab:
Returning back.

Benefits and Issues:
Every single word of this supplication carries great significance; therefore, it is an extremely eloquent and comprehensive supplication. In that era, the best and most superior means of transport was the camel, which was called the "ship of the desert." Thus, the rider upon it could develop a sense of elevation and superiority, or even arrogance. Similarly, those who saw him might conceive thoughts of his greatness and superiority, just as is the case nowadays with those who ride airplanes and the finest vehicles.

The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said "Allahu Akbar" three times, striking it three times, and made clear that greatness and majesty belong only to Allah. In the next phrase, he acknowledged and expressed the reality that subjugating this mount for us and granting us the ability to use it is also Allah’s grace and favor. We have no excellence in this; without His favor and grace, any means of transport can become uncontrollable at any moment and can become a cause of destruction and death for a person.

After this, he said that just as we are setting out on this journey today, in the same way, one day we will pack up from this world and present ourselves before our Master and Lord, which is the outcome, purpose, and objective of this life. Therefore, we should never be heedless of concern, preparation, and readiness for this. For this reason, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) then made this supplication: O Allah! Grant me the ability for righteousness and piety in this journey, and for those deeds which are a means of attaining Your pleasure and approval.

After this, he supplicated for ease and facilitation in the journey and for its swift completion. Then he submitted that in this journey, my trust and reliance is only upon Your companionship and help, and as for the household, family, and wealth and possessions which I am leaving behind, You alone are their guardian and protector.

Then, at the end, he sought refuge from the hardship and difficulty of the journey, or from any distressing incident during the journey or upon return. And upon returning from the journey, he also made this supplication, and at the end added these words: We are returning, repenting from our faults and slips, and we worship and praise only our Master and Protector.

Explanation:
1:
O Allah! In this journey, I seek from You goodness and piety (taqwa), and I ask You for the ability to perform deeds by which You are pleased.
O Allah, make this journey easy for us,
Shorten for us the distance of the earth (make the journey seem shorter and easier),
O Allah, You are the companion in the journey,
And You are my deputy and caretaker over my family at home,
O Allah! Remain with us in our journey,
And take care of our families in our absence.

2:
We are returning to our families, insha Allah,
Repentant,
Worshipping our Lord,
And praising (Him).
