Hadith 2582

حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ : الْجَلَبُ وَالْجَنَبُ فِي الرِّهَانِ .
Qatadah said “Taking another horse behind one’s horse to urge it on and taking another horse at one’s side are (done) in a horse race.
Brief Explanation
1؎: In horse racing, «جلب» is that someone makes another follow behind his horse so that he urges the horse on, causing it to move ahead; and «جنب» is that he keeps another horse alongside his own so that when his riding horse becomes tired, he mounts the other horse. In zakat, «جلب» is that the zakat collector dismounts at a distance and tells the zakat giver to bring his livestock to him; and «جنب» is that the giver takes his livestock far from their original place and tells the collector to come there and collect the zakat. Both of these practices are prohibited.
