باب إِكْرَامِ الْخَيْلِ وَارْتِبَاطِهَا وَالْمَسْحِ عَلَى أَكْفَالِهَاChapter: Being Kind To Horses, And Keeping Them, And Rubbing Down Their Rump.
Hadith 2553

حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الطَّالْقَانِيُّ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُهَاجِرِ ، حَدَّثَنِي عُقَيْلُ بْنُ شَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَهْبٍ الْجُشَمِيِّ ، وَكَانَتْ لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " ارْتَبِطُوا الْخَيْلَ وَامْسَحُوا بِنَوَاصِيهَا وَأَعْجَازِهَا ، أَوْ قَالَ أَكْفَالِهَا وَقَلِّدُوهَا ، وَلَا تُقَلِّدُوهَا الْأَوْتَارَ " .
Narrated Abu Wahb al-Jushami,: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Tie the horses, rub down their forelocks and their buttocks (or he said: Their rumps), and put things on their necks, but do not put bowstrings.
Brief Explanation
1؎: Preparing the horse is an allusion to fattening them for jihad, and the purpose of stroking them is to clean their bodies from dust and to ascertain their fatness. In the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), people used to tie the remains of bows around the necks of horses so that they would not be afflicted by the evil eye. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade this as a warning, lest the horse’s neck be choked, and also because this act cannot repel what has been decreed (by Allah).
