Narrated Abu Hurairah: Amr ibn Uqaysh had given usurious loans in pre-Islamic period; so he disliked to embrace Islam until he took them. He came on the day of Uhud and asked: Where are my cousins? They (the people) replied: At Uhud. He asked: Where is so-and-so? They said: At Uhud. He asked: Where is so-and-so? They said: At Uhud. He then put on his coat of mail and rode his horse; he then proceeded towards them. When the Muslims saw him, they said: Keep away, Amir. He said: I have become a believer. He fought until he was wounded. He was then taken to his family wounded. Saad ibn Muadh came to his sister: Ask him (whether he fought) out of partisanship, out of anger for them, or out of anger for Allah. He said: Out of anger of Allah and His Messenger. He then died and entered Paradise. He did not offer any prayer for Allah.

Benefits and Issues:

To sacrifice one’s life in the zeal and support of Allah and His Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and to express one’s feelings of love and anger solely for their sake, is a sign of perfect faith (iman kamil) and a guarantee of salvation with Allah.

Prayer (salah) is a fundamental pillar of Islam.
However, Amr bin Aqeesh (radi Allahu anhu) did not get the opportunity to learn and perform it, so he was considered excused.

Those people understood that Islam is a practical and systematic religion.
There is no concept of opposing or disobeying Allah and His Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in it, nor is there any allowance for the unlawful (haram).
For this reason, Amr (radi Allahu anhu) delayed his acceptance of Islam.
This was his good fortune that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic (azza wa jall), granted him respite.
And thus he was blessed with Islam and then martyrdom (shahadah).

This incident cannot be used as evidence for anyone to delay their acceptance of Islam or repentance from sin.
It is not known whether one will be granted respite in life until one’s objective is fulfilled or not.
Or perhaps the intention itself may change.
Or circumstances may not remain favorable.
And then, if one is deprived of Islam or repentance, one will face everlasting deprivation.
