Hadith 2536

Narrated Abdullah ibn Masud: The Prophet ﷺ said: Our Lord Most High is pleased with a man who fights in the path of Allah, the Exalted; then his companions fled away (i. e. retreated). But he knew that it was a sin (to flee away from the battlefield), so he returned, and his blood was shed. Thereupon Allah, the Exalted, says to His angels: Look at My servant; he returned seeking what I have for him (i. e. the reward), and fearing (the punishment) I have, until his blood was shed.

Benefits and Issues:
This subject has been explained in detail in Surah At-Tawbah.
Allah Ta'ala says: (Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah, so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur'an) ( At-Tawbah 111). Allah Ta'ala has bought the lives and wealth of the believers in exchange for Paradise.
These people fight in the way of Allah, so they kill,
and are killed as well.
This is a true promise mentioned in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur'an.
In short, a Muslim should always remain hopeful for reward from Allah Ta'ala for all his actions and states, and should remain fearful of His punishment.
This is the essence of faith (iman) and its pinnacle.

The amazement (taʿajjub) of Allah Azza wa Jall, like His other attributes, is such that we cannot know its modality (kayfiyyah),
nor can we describe it, because Allah Ta'ala says:
(There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing) ( Ash-Shura 11).
There is nothing like Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
Therefore, these divine attributes are as befits His majesty.
We must have faith in them as they have been stated.
There is no need to delve into their essence or reality,
because no one can ever know it.
