Hadith 2516

Narrated Abu Hurairah: A man said: Messenger of Allah, a man wishes to take part in jihad in Allah's path desiring some worldly advantage? The Prophet ﷺ said: He will have not reward. The people thought it terrible, and they said to the man: Go back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for you might not have made him understand well. He, therefore, (went and again) asked: Messenger of Allah, a man wishes to take part in jihad in Allah's path desiring some worldly advantage? He replied: There is no reward for him. They again said to the man: Return to the Messenger of Allah. He, therefore, said to him third time. He replied: There is no reward for him.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues:
If the intention of the mujahid is fundamentally showing off (riya) and acquiring wealth, then all his actions are invalid.
There is no reward for him.
But if the original and fundamental intention is jihad and raising the word of Allah, and along with that, an intention such as acquiring wealth also becomes mixed in, then this causes a reduction in the reward.
The action does not become invalid.
As has been mentioned in the previous hadith 2497,
that if the mujahideen receive spoils of war (ghanimah), then they obtain two-thirds of their reward in this world itself.
Otherwise, their entire reward remains preserved.
Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah) states that in jihad, the reward of traders, laborers, and those who work for hire is according to the measure of their own intention.
The matter of intention and sincerity (ikhlas) is extremely difficult and requires attention.
On this issue, the explanation of the hadith "Actions are only by intentions" (innama al-a‘malu bi’l-niyyat) in Jami‘ al-‘Ulum wa’l-Hikam (by Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali rahimahullah) is worth reading repeatedly.
