Abu Saeed Al Khudri said “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an expedition towards Banu Lihyan and said “One of the two persons should go forth. He then said to those who sat (at home), If any one of you looks after the family and property of a warrior, he will receive half the reward of the one who goes forth (in jihad). ”

Benefits and Issues: From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that whoever takes excellent care of the family of a mujahid (one striving in the path of Allah), he too receives the full reward like that of the mujahid. And in the other hadith, mention is made of half the reward. The reconciliation between these is as follows: Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) states: If the total reward of both individuals is divided in half, then it becomes equal for both. And in this way, there remains no contradiction. However, the opinion of the present translator (raqim mutarjim) is: If the one who stayed behind preferred this act of staying (to serve the family), then he will receive half the reward. But if both are equally eager to participate in the fighting, and the leader (amir) selects one for fighting and assigns the other to serve the family of the fighter, then in this way, both will be equal in reward. And Allah knows best.

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, Waki‘ narrated to us, from Isma‘il, from Qays, who said: ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud said. And Ibn Numayr narrated to us, my father narrated to us, and Muhammad ibn Bishr, they said: Isma‘il narrated to us, from Qays, who said: I heard ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud say: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There is no envy except in two: a man whom Allah has given wealth and He enables him to spend it in the truth, and a man whom Allah has given wisdom, so he judges by it and teaches it."

Hadith Commentary:
Benefits and Issues: The meaning of wisdom (hikmah) is to place everything in its proper place and to prevent it from being placed in an improper place; to know the true and real nature of things and to act accordingly; and to make just and equitable decisions.
