Hadith 2505

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ النَّحْوِيِّ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : إِلا تَنْفِرُوا يُعَذِّبْكُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا سورة التوبة آية 39 ، وَ مَا كَانَ لأَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ يَعْمَلُونَ سورة التوبة آية 120 ـ 121 نَسَخَتْهَا الْآيَةُ الَّتِي تَلِيهَا وَمَا كَانَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لِيَنْفِرُوا كَافَّةً سورة التوبة آية 122 .
Ibn Abbas said “The Quranic verse “Unless you go forth, He will punish you with a grievous penalty, and the verse “It is not fitting for the people of Madina”. . . up to “that Allaah might required their deed with the best (possible reward) have been repealed by the verse. Nor should the believers all go forth together. ”

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:

The meaning of the interpretation by Hazrat Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu is that the obligation for all Muslims to go out for every jihad has been abrogated, whereas other commentators say that these verses are definitive (muhkam).
And in jihad, the circumstances and conditions should be taken into consideration.
And it is necessary to keep a group in Dar al-Islam as well, so that the center is not left completely empty.


From verse number 122, it becomes absolutely clear that by being practically engaged in jihad, one attains understanding in the religion (tafaqquh fi al-din).
This is not attained in ordinary circumstances.
