Narrated Aishah, Ummul Muminin: Some food was presented to me and Hafsah. We were fasting, but broke our fast. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon us. We said to him: A gift was presented to us; we coveted it and we broke our fast. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: There is no harm to you; keep a fast another day in lieu of it.

However, the majority have interpreted this as being a matter of choice, because in one narration from Umm Hani it is stated: ((Wa in kana tatawwu'an fa in shi'ti faqdi wa in shi'ti fala taqdi)) “And if it is a voluntary (nafl) fast, then if you wish, make it up, and if you wish, do not make it up.” This narration has been recorded by Ahmad, and Abu Dawud has also narrated a hadith with the same meaning.
Note:
