Hadith 2370

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ ، وَعَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي مَكْحُولٌ ، أَنَّ شَيْخًا مِنَ الْحَيِّ ، قَالَ عُثْمَانُ فِي حَدِيثِهِ : مُصَدَّقٌ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّ ثَوْبَانَ مَوْلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " أَفْطَرَ الْحَاجِمُ وَالْمَحْجُومُ " .
Narrated Thawban, the client of the Prophet ﷺ: The Prophet ﷺ as saying: A man who cups and a man who gets himself cupped break their fast.

Benefits and Issues:
Imam Ahmad and Ishaq ibn Rahwayh have taken the apparent meaning of (Aftara al-Hajim wal-Mahjum) — that is, their fast is broken.
And some other scholars interpret this to mean that their fast has come close to being broken.
In other words, there is a sense of warning and dislike in it.
And Allah knows best. According to this second meaning, there is reconciliation between the narrations of this chapter and the narrations of the next chapter, in which its permissibility is mentioned.
