Hadith 2348

Narrated Talq ibn Ali al-Yamami: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Eat and drink; let not the white and ascending light prevent you from (eating and drinking); so eat and drink until the red light spreads horizontally.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
The correct view is that whiteness begins to spread on the horizons. However, sometimes when the weather is cloudy, a kind of redness also appears to be spreading, but in normal circumstances, it is the whiteness that spreads, not the redness.

English Commentary:
1: By ((al-sāti‘ al-muṣ‘id)) is meant the false dawn (fajr kādhib), and by ((al-aḥmar)) is meant the true dawn (ṣubḥ ṣādiq).
Some people have used this hadith as evidence that eating and drinking is permissible until the appearance of fajr.
However, the majority (jumhūr) say that as soon as fajr is established, eating and drinking become prohibited. They respond to this narration by saying that the term ((al-aḥmar)) is used due to proximity, because with the rising of fajr, redness (ḥumrah) appears; thus, the establishment of fajr has been referred to as ((al-aḥmar)).
