باب إِذَا أُغْمِيَ الشَّهْرُChapter: When (Sighting The Crescent for) The Month Was Obscured.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ الْبَزَّازُ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ الضَّبِّيُّ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ الْمُعْتَمِرِ ، عَنْ رِبْعِيِّ بْنِ حِرَاشٍ ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَا تُقَدِّمُوا الشَّهْرَ حَتَّى تَرَوْا الْهِلَالَ أَوْ تُكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ ، ثُمَّ صُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْا الْهِلَالَ أَوْ تُكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ " . قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد : وَرَوَاهُ سُفْيَانُ وَغَيْرُهُ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ رِبْعِيٍّ ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، لَمْ يُسَمِّ حُذَيْفَةَ .
Narrated Hudhayfah: The Prophet ﷺ said: Do not fast (for Ramadan) before the coming of the month until you sight the moon or complete the number (of thirty days); then fast until you sight the moon or complete the number (of thirty days).

In this narration, it is explicitly stated that one should refrain from fasting before the new moon is sighted. And this is what should be acted upon.
