Narrated Abdullah ibn Masud: I can invoke the curse of Allah on anyone who wishes: The smaller surat an-Nisa (i. e. Surat at-Talaq) was revealed after the verse regarding the waiting period of four months and ten days had been revealed.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues:
➊ In Surah At-Talaq it is stated: (وَأُولَاتُ الْأَحْمَالِ أَجَلُهُنَّ أَنْ يَضَعْنَ حَمْلَهُنَّ) (At-Talaq: 4), and the waiting period (‘iddah) for pregnant women is that their waiting period ends when they deliver their pregnancy. And this Surah is called Surah An-Nisa’ Al-Qusra (the shorter Surah An-Nisa’) because, just as in the well-known longer Surah An-Nisa’ the rulings and issues related to women are mentioned, in this Surah as well, those same issues are discussed.
➋ The statement of Abdullah radi Allahu anhu is the basis of a well-known juristic (fiqhi) principle: that whenever two instructions are reported regarding an issue, the one that was revealed later is the one to be acted upon.
➌ There is no contradiction between the noble verse of Surah Al-Baqarah (And those among you who die... [and leave behind wives, they shall wait]... four months and ten [days]) (Al-Baqarah: 234) and the verse of Surah At-Talaq. Rather, the waiting period of four months and ten days is for those women who are not pregnant, and if she is pregnant, then her waiting period is until she delivers her pregnancy.
