Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: A woman embraced Islam during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; she then married. Her (former) husband then came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah, I have already embraced Islam, and she had the knowledge about my Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took her away from her latter husband and restored her to her former husband.

Benefits and Issues: ➊ The narration is weak in its chain of transmission; however, the ruling is that if either of the spouses accepts Islam, separation occurs between them. But if, during the waiting period (‘iddah), the husband also becomes Muslim, then the woman will remain in the marriage bond of that same husband. Afterwards, if she does not wish to wait for her former husband, she is justified in marrying a Muslim man. However, if she chooses to wait until he becomes Muslim, even if the period becomes lengthy, there is no harm in this. As will be mentioned in the following chapter and hadith.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas (RA): A woman had accepted Islam and then re-married, so her (previous) husband came and said, "O Allah's Messenger, I had accepted Islam and she knew that I had done so." So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) took her away from her second husband and returned her to her first one. [Reported by Ahmad, Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah. Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim graded it Sahih (authentic)].
