Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: A woman embraced Islam during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; she then married. Her (former) husband then came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah, I have already embraced Islam, and she had the knowledge about my Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took her away from her latter husband and restored her to her former husband.

Benefits and Issues:
➊
The narration is weak in its chain of transmission; however, the ruling is that if either of the spouses accepts Islam, separation occurs between them.
But if, during the waiting period (‘iddah), the husband also becomes Muslim, then the woman will remain in the marriage bond of that same husband.
Afterwards, if she does not wish to wait for her former husband, she is justified in marrying a Muslim man.
However, if she chooses to wait until he becomes Muslim, even if the period becomes lengthy, there is no harm in this.
As will be mentioned in the following chapter and hadith.

The aforementioned narration is weak in its chain of transmission; however, the ruling remains that if, due to religious difference, separation and dissolution occur between husband and wife—such that the woman accepts Islam, and then during her waiting period (‘iddah), the man also accepts Islam, and the woman is aware of the man’s acceptance of Islam—then in such a case, she is absolutely not permitted to marry elsewhere. If she does so, the marriage will be declared invalid.
