Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Sins are of two types: major (kabirah) and minor (saghirah). Major sins are those for which the Shariah has prescribed a legal punishment (hadd or ta’zir), or for which there is a severe torment, curse, or a stern warning mentioned. Such sins are not forgiven without repentance (tawbah).
Minor sins are those which occur incidentally and for which the Shariah has not prescribed any legal punishment (hadd or ta’zir).
These are referred to as (lamam).
In Surah An-Najm, in the mention of the righteous (muhsinin), it is stated that they avoid major sins and acts of indecency, except for ordinary sins; minor sins are continuously forgiven through general good deeds. However, no believer should become bold in committing them, because forgiveness or non-forgiveness depends on the will of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. Furthermore, the scholars have written that if someone does not care about minor sins and makes them a habit, then those too fall under the category of major sins.
Similarly, if a major sin occurs unintentionally, and a person feels remorse and frequently repents, then, insha’Allah, it will be forgiven like a minor sin. In any case, a person should continue to seek forgiveness from Allah for all his known and unknown sins.

➋ Referring to the sins of the bodily organs—eyes, ears, hands, feet, and mouth—as “zina” (fornication/adultery) is an indication of their extreme abhorrence, that their outcome can be extremely evil.
