Narrated Sahl bin Saad al-Saeedi: A woman came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah, I have offered myself to you. When she stood for a long time, a man got up and said: Messenger of Allah, marry her to me if you have no need for her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked: Have you anything to give her as dower ? He replied: I have nothing by this lower garment of mine. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If you give your lower garment, you will sit while you have no lower garment. So look for something else. He said: I do not find anything. He said: Look for something, even though it should be an iron ring. The man sought it but found nothing. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do you know anything from the Quran ? He said: Yes, I know surah so and so, which he named. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I have given you her in marriage for the part of the Quran which you know.

1؎ : From this hadith it is understood that there is no fixed limit for the amount of mahr; whether it is little or much, thus marriage is valid even on the basis of labor, service, or teaching of the Qur'an. This is the opinion of the majority of scholars. Some, however, have set a limit of ten dirhams, according to whom mahr is not valid if it is less than this. But their evidences are not sufficient to oppose these authentic ahadith.
Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was among the people present with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). A woman came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I offer myself to you (in marriage), so consider your opinion about me. A man stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! Marry her to me if you have no need of her. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace be upon him) remained silent. The woman stood up again and repeated her request. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to that man: Do you have anything which you can give her (as mahr)? He replied: No! The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Go and look for something!" The man went and then returned and said: O Messenger of Allah! I found nothing. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Go and look, even if it is an iron ring." The man went and came back and said: O Messenger of Allah! I found nothing, not even an iron ring. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Do you know any portion of the Qur’an?" He replied: Yes, I know such and such surahs. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Go! I have married her to you for what you know of the Qur’an."

Benefit: In this hadith, it is mentioned that a woman can present herself for marriage on her own when she has no guardian (wali). This hadith also proves that there is no minimum amount specified for the bridal gift (mahr).
