Aishah said “In what was sent down in the Quran ten suckling’s made marriage unlawful, but they were abrogated by five known ones and when the Prophet ﷺ dies, these words were among what was recited in the Quran. ”

Imam Nawawi rahimahullah states:
“That is, the recitation regarding five sucklings (khams rid‘aat) was abrogated at the very last moment, to the extent that (soon after this) the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam passed away. (This is the reason that, due to it not being known to everyone,) some people continued to recite the verse of five sucklings.”

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The literal and technical meaning of the word (al-rad‘ah) as mentioned in the hadiths is that a child takes the breast into his mouth and begins to suck milk, and then leaves it of his own accord without any external cause. This constitutes one rad‘ah. The same meaning applies to (al-massah).

➋ The purpose of the statement of Aisha radi Allahu anha is that the abrogation (naskh) was revealed only a short time before the death of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, so there were some people who, not having received the information, continued to recite these words, but later their recitation was abrogated, although the ruling remained.

Benefits and Issues:

In this narration, it is stated with uncertainty whether the command was revealed as ten times or five times, but the aforementioned hadith in Sahih Muslim has clarified that the command was revealed as five times.

The recitation of some verses of the Noble Qur’an was abrogated while their ruling remained.
The meaning of abrogation of recitation is that they are neither to be written in the Noble Qur’an nor recited in prayer, and in such matters, their ruling will not be considered as Qur’anic.
Despite this, the ruling mentioned therein will be acted upon, just as many other rulings are acted upon which are not mentioned in the Qur’an but are established from hadith.
