Hadith Grading
1؎: Some people say that in this hadith, Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha radi Allahu anha did not mention the total number of the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ‘umrahs, but rather she meant that within one year, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed two ‘umrahs: one in Dhu al-Qa‘dah and one in Shawwal. However, this statement is not correct, because the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam never performed two ‘umrahs within one year, and except for the ‘umrah performed with Hajj, all of the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ‘umrahs were in Dhu al-Qa‘dah. Therefore, Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha’s radi Allahu anha statement «عمرۃ فی شوّال» is a mistake on her part, and if it is to be considered preserved, then its interpretation would be that by this ‘umrah she meant the ‘umrah of Ji‘irrana, which, although it took place in Dhu al-Qa‘dah, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had departed from Makkah for Hunayn in Shawwal, and upon returning, he assumed ihram from Ji‘irrana and performed this ‘umrah. So, considering the time of departure, she attributed it to Shawwal.

1991. Commentary: ➊ The correct and sound view is that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed four ‘umrahs. As is explicitly stated in the two Sahihs (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-‘Umrah, Hadith 177; 1776 and Sahih Muslim, al-Hajj, Hadith 1253). However, the reason why ‘Aishah (radi Allahu anha) mentioned two ‘umrahs is perhaps because he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) actually and independently performed two ‘umrahs. During the ‘umrah of Hudaybiyyah, he was prevented, and he returned. And the ‘umrah performed during Hajj was a subsidiary ‘umrah. She did not count these. ➋ The mention of ‘umrah in Shawwal means that the journey for the ‘umrah of Ji‘ranah began in Shawwal, so she mentioned Shawwal; otherwise, it was actually performed in Dhu al-Qa‘dah.
