1991. Commentary:
➊ The correct and sound view is that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed four ‘umrahs. As is explicitly stated in the two Sahihs (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-‘Umrah, Hadith 177; 1776 and Sahih Muslim, al-Hajj, Hadith 1253). However, the reason why ‘Aishah (radi Allahu anha) mentioned two ‘umrahs is perhaps because he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) actually and independently performed two ‘umrahs. During the ‘umrah of Hudaybiyyah, he was prevented, and he returned. And the ‘umrah performed during Hajj was a subsidiary ‘umrah. She did not count these.
➋ The mention of ‘umrah in Shawwal means that the journey for the ‘umrah of Ji‘ranah began in Shawwal, so she mentioned Shawwal; otherwise, it was actually performed in Dhu al-Qa‘dah. (Bazl al-Majhud)
