Hadith 1988

Abu Bakr ibn Abdur Rahman said: The messenger of Marwan whom he sent to Umm Maqil reported to me. She said: Abu Maqil accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during hajj. When he came (to her) she said: You know that hajj is incumbent on me. They walked until they visited him (i. e. the Prophet) and she asked (him): Messenger of Allah, hajj is due from me, and Abu Maqil has a camel. Abu Maqil said: She spoke the truth, I have dedicated it to the cause of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Give it to her, that is in the cause of Allah. So he gave the camel to her. She then said: Messenger of Allah, I am a woman who has become aged and ill. Is there any action which would be sufficient for me as my hajj? He replied: Umrah performed during Ramadan is sufficient as hajj.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
1988. Commentary: Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has declared this narration to be authentic without the portion “O Allah! I am a woman...” up to “...is sufficient.” However, the part that comes after it, namely “Umrah in Ramadan is sufficient for Hajj,” should also be considered unauthentic, because it is connected to the same question which has been declared weak. Furthermore, in other authentic narrations, the words stated are: “Umrah in Ramadan is equal to Hajj,” not that it is sufficient for Hajj. And Allah knows best.

1:
That is, the meaning is not that in every respect ‘umrah is equal to hajj,
rather, it is only in terms of reward and recompense that it is equal to hajj.
It is not the case that by performing ‘umrah, the obligatory hajj is fulfilled,
nor that a vowed hajj (nazr) is completed thereby.

1989. Commentary:
➊ Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written in Fath al-Bari (Kitab al-‘Umrah, Bab ‘Umrah fi Ramadan, Hadith 1782) that these are actually two separate incidents. This one is about Umm Ma‘qil, and the previous hadith (1988) is about Umm Taliq. As Abu ‘Ali ibn Sakan has extracted it, and Ibn Mandah has mentioned it in Kitab al-Sahabah, and Dulaabi has narrated it in al-Kuna.
➋ ‘Allamah al-Albani rahimahullah has declared the woman’s statement in the first hadith (1988) " (qad kabirtu wa sakuntu... etc.)" as not authentic, and in the second hadith, Umm Ma‘qil’s statement " (al-hajj hajjatun wa al-‘umrah ‘umrah... etc.)" as weak.
➌ Spouses should be helpers to each other in all religious and worldly matters.
➍ Dedicating wealth in the way of Allah (fi sabilillah) is an act of great resolve. Hajj is also counted among fi sabilillah. Therefore, Ibn ‘Abbas radi Allahu anhu, Ibn ‘Umar radi Allahu anhu, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and Ishaq Rahawaih rahimahullah consider it permissible to assist those going on the journey of Hajj with zakat funds. Whereas most other scholars take “fi sabilillah” to mean only jihad. And what is closer to the truth is that assisting pilgrims, missionary efforts, and jihad—all these occasions are included in fi sabilillah. And Allah knows best.
➎ The reward of ‘umrah in Ramadan is equal to that of Hajj, but this does not mean that any obligation (such as a debt) is waived.
➏ Just as the reward of an action increases due to presence of heart and sincerity of intention, likewise, the reward of an action increases due to the blessedness of the time.
➐ Performing ‘umrah in Ramadan is among the most virtuous of deeds.
