حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ الْأَعْرَجِ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ ،عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : خَطَبَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ النَّاسَ بِمِنًى وَنَزَّلَهُمْ مَنَازِلَهُمْ ، فَقَالَ : " لِيَنْزِلْ الْمُهَاجِرُونَ هَا هُنَا ، وَأَشَارَ إِلَى مَيْمَنَةِ الْقِبْلَةِ ، وَ الْأَنْصَارُ هَا هُنَا ، وَأَشَار إِلَى مَيْسَرَةِ الْقِبْلَةِ ، ثُمَّ لِيَنْزِلِ النَّاسُ حَوْلَهُمْ " .
Abdur Rahman ibn Muadh said that he heard a man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ say: The Prophet ﷺ addressed the people at Mina and he made them stay in their dwellings. He then said: The Muhajirun (Emigrants) should stay here, and he made a sign to the right side of the qiblah, and the Ansar (the Helpers) here, and he made a sign to the left side of the qiblah; the people should stay around them.

1957. Commentary:
➊ This was a miracle of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that people at a distance heard his sermon in their respective places.
➋ "Placed the index fingers"—this either means that he put them in his ears and then spoke in a loud voice. This meaning is supported by a version of Abu Dawud in which the addition of « فی اذنیه)» is found. (Nayl al-Awtar) Or it is possible that he placed his fingers between his thumbs and gestured to indicate: "Throw small pebbles like this." (Badh al-Majhul)

(1) "Ears were opened"—this too was a miracle of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), that his voice was being heard throughout the whole of Mina, even though Mina covers several square miles.
(2) "When the matter of pebbles came"—another translation of this phrase would be: "until you reached near the Jamaraat and you pelted the Jamaraat with pebbles used for khadhf (stone-throwing)." Both meanings are possible.
(3) "Pebbles of khadhf"—that is, small pebbles, such that even if they hit someone, they would not cause a wound or injury. Children used to practice target-throwing with such pebbles. These could be easily thrown by holding them between two fingers.
